Our Story
BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT UNIT
Those are not words you ever want to read on a door you’re passing through.
Walking through those doors changed my life.
Not 24 hours before, I was home decorating the Christmas tree. Now I was halfway across the country meeting my sister who was airlifted to a hospital in Denver.
She had sore gums and was feeling tired from hosting nine people for Thanksgiving dinner.
She thought she might be getting a sinus infection. Thankfully her doctor sent her for a blood test. She was diagnosed with leukemia and immediately airlifted 320 miles to Denver Presbyterian Hospital.
Someone said, “It’s not a sprint. It’s a marathon. I hope you’re up for a marathon.” Those words didn’t quite sink in until much later.
For any of you that have had a family member become seriously ill, you know how long the days can be while you sit in the hospital at your loved one’s side.
In normal life, I’m a documentary filmmaker, which means I’m on the road much of the time. Instantly becoming a caretaker for my sister meant an abrupt change of lifestyle, which I was glad to be able to make. I was very fortunate to have a family that supported me while being my sister’s caretaker. You see, my sister didn’t have anyone. With no children and aging parents, I was the only one up for the task. I didn’t think twice.
If you’re not familiar with blood cancers or leukemia, and the treatment with chemotherapy and bone marrow/stem cell transplants, I’ll be the first to tell you, the whole treatment takes a long, long time – months. It’s good to have a book, knitting or something to do while waiting, because there’s a lot of waiting. I decided to figure out how to keep producing, writing, directing and all things creative while Cathy was sleeping.
Thus, Drawworthy was born in the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit of Denver Presbyterian Hospital. No longer are the words, “Bone Marrow Transplant Unit” so menacing to me. I’d like to think of it as a place where second chances and new lives are created through a combination of modern medicine and the generosity of the bone marrow / stem cell donors. You see, blood cancers can be cured. While it’s one of the worst cancers, it’s also one of the easiest to cure with a transplant.
Cathy, my sister, received her Stem Cell transplant on March 5, 2015. The one perfect match that gave my sister a second chance at life was found in another country. (The only clue we have is that the country had mad cow disease, so we think it’s possibly the UK). We will never be able to thank Cathy’s generous donor in person. However, we would like to thank all donors and help sign more people up as donors.
So, in the spirit of giving and thanking all bone marrow and stem cell donors, we here at Drawworthy are giving a percentage of every whiteboard animation you purchase to — Be the Match and Love, Hope, Strength. They are the organizations that sign up donors and help save lives.
Together we can delete blood cancer.
